Bright, deep ruby-red. Aromas of dark berries, licorice, bitter chocolate and toasty oak. Very fresh and tightly wound, with a superb core of primary black fruit flavor. Highly concentrated but currently closed in on itself and dominated by the oak. Best today on the finish, where the density and breadth of the wine are apparent and the tannins are serious but sweet. A wonderfully stylish, vibrant merlot-dominated wine. The crop level in 2005 was 39 hectoliters per hectare, according to Thienpont, who describes this wine as "very Pomerol."

92-94

A remarkable blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc has produced a Medoc-styled Pomerol exhibiting a deep ruby/purple hue, a sweet bouquet of roasted herbs, licorice, toasty vanilla, and plenty of black currants as well as truffles. It is a rich, classic effort with abundant tannin, good acidity, and impeccable purity and balance. Always a restrained, reserved style of wine, but it delivers considerable complexity, and ages brilliantly. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030+.

This begins with a sexy roasted fruit character on the nose, then opens up to hints of spice, chocolate, wet earth, and dried flowers. The palate is incredible, with a concentration that builds, and a finish that remains agile and racy. Very defined and beautiful wine with great length and freshness. This still needs some time in the bottle. Pull the cork in 2018.

Intense blackberry, chocolate and floral aromas. Full-bodied, with amazing texture of soft tannins and ripe fruit. All in balance. So long. Goes on and on. Loving and tender. This reminds me of 1950, although I wasn't around to taste it from barrel! I am amazed. Score range: 95-100

I didn't find any flaws in the 2005 Vieux Chateau Certan, I must confess. It was perfumed, subtle and shy at first, with light purple fruit, nut and earth aromas. Bottled in May of 2007 and about two-thirds Merlot, the '05 was rich and concentrated, but Alexander found the '04 'thicker and more complex,' and I saw that in the nose of the 2004 over time, but not the palate. The '05 was chewy and fleshy, and its dryness did, indeed, stand out, per Alexander's previous comment. I liked its grip, however, and its acidity really stood out, along with its delicious ceramic and mineral flavors

A small estate by Bordeaux standards, this Pomerol estate has been considered one of the great producers in its appellation for a long time. One of the Thienpont stable, it can be considered a less flashy, elder sibling to the micro-cuvee estate Le Pin. For a wine which is often mentioned in the same breath as Petrus, the Grand Vin is surprisingly good value for money and the second wine, Gravette de Certan is very reasonable indeed.
